Finding the right balance of work, rest and play to achieve the best version of you!

Work-life balance is a phrase that has been tossed around a lot lately. It's often used as a 'perk' by companies to attract and retain employees. But what does work-life balance really mean? And more importantly, how can you achieve it in your own life? In this blog post, we'll take a closer look at what work-life balance means and some tips on how you can achieve it.

Does the rapid shift to working from home imply a better work-life balance? Absolutely not, but it can certainly help. Time wasted commuting might now be used for other activities, however, are you really making the most of it or falling into harmful workhour habits because you can? Are you aware of the scales in your life? Do they appear to be balanced or do they tip too far one direction?

Genuine work-life balance is important for many reasons but the three most apparent being:

1.     Less susceptible to burnout - the impact of work stresses on mental health is well documented and work stresses infiltrate home life, issues compound and can result in burnout. Balance gives you a break from work, helping you come back recharged and with fresh ideas.

2.    Increased productivity - when you're not constantly worrying about home life or taking work home with you, you're able to be more focused and productive during the time you are actually working. You're also less likely to make careless mistakes, adding to more work!

3.    Better peronal relationships - when you have a more balanced life, you're able to devote more time and attention to your loved ones. This can lead to stronger relationships and a better overall quality of life.

No doubt work-life balance is essential, but let's look at what it really entails. Firstly, work-life balance looks a little different for everyone and it continues to be an evolving area for companies to understand what it means for employees of all generations including baby boomers, millennials, and generation X.

It isn't simply about dividing your time equally between work and personal life. Work-life balance entails achieving a suitable blend of all aspects of your life. This includes employment, family, health, socialising, pursuing interests, or further study for example.

Australians are time-poor with many rushing from one thing to the next in all aspects of our lives - from deadline to deadline at work, or doing the school run or a gym class on the home front. It can be difficult to achieve balance in all of these areas, but it's critical to try to find a way to make them all work together.

So, how do you go about achieving work-life balance? Here are our top 10 tips:

1.     What is important to you? Make a list of your priorities, and figure out how you'll fit them in. It may vary from week to week, and it might require doing things in a manner that you hadn't considered. Perhaps going to bed later on Monday so that you can get up early Tuesday to cram something in before the day begins. Sometimes just making minor adjustments to your schedule can make a big difference.

2.    Don't overcommit; learning how to say no is a valuable skill. It might be difficult to do, but it's critical if you want to keep control of your life. You don't want to spread yourself too thin and become overwhelmed or anxious.

3.    Create a routine - having some structure in your days (and weeks) will help you feel more in control and balanced. This could involve blocked time for work, exercise, family time, personal interests etc. It's important to create a boundary between home and work.

4.    Take a break - we all need breaks during the day, even if it's just five minutes to walk around the block or have a quick snack. Breaks help us refresh and recharge so that we can continue to be productive.

5.    Set some goals for yourself and make time to work towards them - whether it's learning a new skill, reading more books or simply decluttering your home, having some goals to work towards will help you feel productive and balanced. You should have two distinct objectives: personal and professional.

6.    Don't check work emails after hours - this is one of the most difficult things to do but it's so important. If you're constantly checking your emails and responding to them after work, you're not giving yourself the opportunity to switch off and relax.

7.    Find a job that you like. It's in our nature to be appreciated and work in a position that gives us fulfillment – sure, most jobs will have tedious aspects to them, but if you genuinely despise your work on a daily basis, it's probably time to reconsider whether this is the appropriate role for you.

8.    Let go of perfectionism - this is a tough one, but it's important to remember that perfection is an impossible standard to meet. Accepting this will help you to reduce the amount of stress in your life. This isn't about throwing your work ethic out the window, more about careful time management and not spending too long deliberating over a task that doesn't require such intensity.

9.    Health is wealth - regular exercise is a well documented and proven stress reliever. Take regular breaks during the day. Eat well. Sleep well. Research indicates that adults who sleep fewer than eight hours a night report higher stress levels than those who sleep at least eight hours a night, not to mention a myriad of other health issues.

10. Switch off and recharge the batteries. Technology makes it possible to work around the clock so be mindful of the temptation to do so. By leaving work for work and home for home, you will allow yourself to dedicate time to both and give each the attention they deserve. Everyone needs a break!

Finally, don't be afraid to ask for help. If you're struggling to find a balance between work and home, talk to your boss, partner, family members, or friends. They may be able to offer some helpful advice or support. Achieving work-life balance can be a challenge, but it's definitely worth it. You can only burn the candle at both ends before something gives.

By following these tips, you can create a healthy balance in your life and be happier and more productive. Don't forget you can't pour from an empty cup - be sure to make time to make sure yours is full.
